What went well?

When recording the Phone Call scene, there were roughly three things that went well during the shoot. Firstly, when looking back at our footage after finished recording, pretty much all the footage came out very decent. Secondly, throughout shooting our scene, our group seemed quite organised, therefore the shooting went very well. Finally, moving the equipment from location to location had no issues occur during the process.

What didn't go well?

When recording the Phone Call scene, there was some issues that occurred. Firstly, the actors were not very confident when shooting their scenes. Secondly, our group took a decent amount of filming time trying to work out where to shoot the scene. Finally, before we went out to shoot the scene, we should have checked our camera as when we were filming we had to record a couple of shots multiple times due to the camera stopping recording automatically for no reason.

Shot Blocking:

My specific role in the scene was assisting with the Lighting Production. This meant that I was in charge of helping make sure that the lights were in the correct place. This includes the positioning and checking that the camera was not too bright or dim, to warm or too cold and that it wasn't in the shot itself. I believe that my role in the scene was very important and that it helps improve the overall final shot.

Whilst we were shooting the scene, the wasn't really much overall control by the Directors and Assistant Directors. During shooting the shots, there was too much noise before the Director said action and there was still some whispering while the camera was rolling. Overall, I think that the scene went quite well but could easily be improved.

Crew Roles

Director

The role of a director is to ensure that the film looks and sounds good during the production. They work along side the producers and writers. The Director is ensuring the final programme is perfect to the original idea.

In my personal opinion, I would prefer not to be the Director. The reason for this is because I do not feel comfortable being in charge of so many people. Also, if anything went wrong I would be the one taking the responsibility of getting it correct. Mainly, I feel that the pressure would get to me and that I would prefer not to be the Director.

2/10

First Assistant Director (1AD)

The role of a '1AD' is assisting the Director however, and whenever they need. They are in charge of co-ordinating all of the production activity, and supervising the cast and crew. Another role of the '1AD' is being in charge of their own assistant directors and runners.

Personally, I would not like to be the '1AD'. This is down to the fact that they have such a big responsibility throughout the production. I do not like to those sorts of responsibilities. Therefore, I would prefer to have another role on the production rather than the '1AD'.

2/10

Cinematographer

A Cinematographer (also known as Director of Photography) are key Heads of Departments on film productions and their main role on a production if to provide a film with a very unique and aesthetically pleasing look.

I would be more than happy to take upon this role. Outside of college I have a very keen eye for cameras. I love to take photos and film small things on my phone. It is also the sort of role I would like to go down in the future.

9/10

Camera Operator

The role of a camera operator is to do what the Director of Photography (Cinematographer) and Director want the shot to look like. They have to follow the instructions for shot composition. They are usually found to be the first person to use the camera's eyepiece to assess how all of the elements come together to create a cinematic effect.

I would be happy to do this role. I have always loved to use a camera whenever I have the chance. I believe that I have a keen eye for making shots look better than other people. I love to work out why something doesn't look right when I have taken a shot.

9/10

Gaffer

The role of a gaffer is being in charge and responsible for all of the practical aspects or lighting sets and locations. They work very close to the Lighting Directors in order to create the bets looking scene to give it a aesthetically pleasing look in the final shot.

I would prefer not to do this role, however if there was literally nothing else to do then I wouldn't have a problem with it. This is due to the fact that I am not very good at making the shot lighting look very good. I prefer to be behind the camera rather than setting up the shot.

5/10

Sound Recordist

The role of a sound recordist is to record the sound in the location of the scene. This could be outside or in a studio. They usually do their role at the same time as the camera operator to ensure that the quality if the best and that the sound is the most natural to the scene and time of filming.

This is the type of role which I would rather have another job over. This is due to the fact that I am not very good with working with sound. I struggle to make the sound equal and sound good in smaller pieces of work during lessons. Therefore, I feel although working with sound would not be my strongest role on the set.

3/10

Art Director

The role of the Art Director is to understand how to Production Designer has created the sets and locations that eventually give the productions their aesthetically pleasing look. They don't usually stay on one project at a time. They could be working on alternate films, commercials and certain television shows.

This would probably the the role I would be most upset taking charge of. I hated every type of Art as a teenager and child. Therefore, I feel that if I was in charge of this role I would be very down about it and now do the job very well. I would be very upset if this was the role that I was give on a set production.

1/10

SFX Supervisor

The role of a SFX Supervisor (also known as a Prosthetics Artist) is to work with the Make-Up designer and director. During their role they have to break down the script and analyse what sort of prosthetics are needed for which character and when during the production. They usually work from detailed drawings and specifications to make sure they get it as close to perfection as possible.

I do not feel I would do a good job with the role. This is due to the fact that I am not very good at working wit make-up or fiddly objects which are certainly going to be needed in this role. I do not feel I would do a very good job making this look very realistic.

3/10

Data Wrangler / Assistant Editor

The role of the Assistant Editor is to take charge of the day-to-day running edit suite. This leaves the editor alone to concentrate on editing the footage. They don't have to worry about editing the footage at the same time as getting the footage from the cameras as well. They have to communicate with the other departments to understand the analyse of the work flow and to pass the information on to the main editor.

I would be happy to do this role. I feel like I would be responsible enough to make sure the footage is transferred to the main editor at the right time and without losing any of it. I would be more than happy to do this role.

7/10

Clapper / Continuity Editor

The role of a clapper is being responsible for the smooth running of the entire camera department. The role of a Continuity Editor is to make sure that the characters are in the same position and that their clothes and objects in the shot are in the same place from a previous shot to make sure that everything looks the same, even though the scenes are filmed from multiple angles at different times.

I would be happy to do this role as I feel like I have a keen eye for making sure things are the same during different shots. I feel I would be loud enough and polite enough to talk the the actors and tell them what it different from a previous scene.
